| Heads Up! Griffins Upset Mustangs Westminster’s Jace Maxfield headed in the game-winner with just over 17 minutes remaining and the host Griffins completed a second-half comeback with a 2-1 victory over the No. 2 Mustangs Thursday evening in the season-opener for both clubs in Salt Lake City. Maxfield’s goal, a header off a free kick, came at the 72:51 mark and snapped a one-all tie. It followed teammate Nic Duncan’s match-tying tally over eight minutes earlier that allowed the Griffins to catch the Mustangs. Starting the 2010 campaign with their highest pre-season ranking in school history, the Mustangs struck first in the opening half when senior midfielder Jake Marchesani scored unassisted at the 25:36 mark on a shot that curled inside the far post from ten yards out. That 1-0 lead lasted for almost 40 minutes until Duncan’s goal got past sophomore goalie Andrew Bussell who was making his second career start. The Mustangs, who split a pair of matches with the Griffins last year, look to even their record on Saturday evening when they play Benedictine of Kansas. |
