David Alegria and Brian Gardner tallied goals 36 seconds apart in the first half and The Master’s College went on to down Southwestern of Arizona 5-1 Friday evening in the NCCAA West Classic on Reese Field.
The win was the Mustangs’ second in a row and improved their record to 2-1-2.
Alegria’s goal, his first of the season and assisted by Gardner, came at the 28:09 mark of the first half and knotted the game at one-all. Southwestern had broken on top first when A. J. Jaramillo sliced one by Mustang goalie Andrew Bussell with 18:39 off the clock.
Then, just 36 seconds after Alegria tied it up, Gardner unknotted it, scoring his first goal of the year off an assist from Jake Marchesani. The 2-1 advantage held up for just over 11 minutes until Marlon Lindo gave the Mustangs some breathing room, taking a pass from senior transfer Andrew Scheck and sending it past Eagle goalie Jorge Arauz for a two-goal edge with just over five minutes left in the first half.
The Mustangs polished off the win with two more scores in the second half. First, Andrew Totaro scored unassisted at the 56:11 mark and then freshman Storm Lilly tallied his first collegiate goal with 18:24 left to play on another Gardner assist.
After Bussell gave up the early goal, he settled down and was rarely tested the rest of the way. He registered just one save.
The Mustangs look to make it three in a row on Saturday when they host Simpson at 5:00pm.
