Alegria Makes Extra Work Pay Off

David Alegria scored 9:30 into overtime and The Masterís College escaped San Diego with a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over Pt. Loma Nazarene Saturday afternoon in the GSAC opener for both clubs.

The Mustangs, who havenít lost since August 26, won their fourth game in a row and improved to 4-1-2.

Junior midfielder Doug Armstrong got the Mustangs on the board first, tallying his first goal of the season with 3:32 gone in the match. Brian Gardner assisted on the goal, tying him with teammate Joel Peluffo for the team lead with five assists.

That 1-0 lead held up through the rest of the half and looked like it might be just enough to secure a Mustang victory until the Sea Lionsí Austin Fares scored with 12:41 left to play, beating goalie Andrew Bussell for his sixth goal of the campaign.

The game-tying goal was enough to force overtime but just under 10 minutes in, Alegria sent the Mustangs home winners in unassisted fashion on his second goal of the year.

The Mustangs, playing their first of three conference matches away from Reese Field, stay on the road this next week, taking on Fresno Pacific on Wednesday.
