Never mind that San Diego Christian had yet to win a GSAC match in four outings. The struggling Hawks gave The Master’s College everything it could handle Saturday afternoon on Reese Field.
But, Joel Peluffo made sure that the visitors wouldn’t notch their first conference win against his squad as he scored the match’s only goal 7:28 into the second half to give the Mustangs a hard-fought, 1-0 win. The victory was the club’s second in four days and boosted them into a tie (Fresno Pacific, Vanguard) for third place in the GSAC with a 3-2 record (6-3-2 overall) and nine points.
With junior Joey Mackey making his first career start in goal, the defense responded with a lockdown effort, allowing only two shots on goal the entire afternoon. But, the offense, despite outshooting the Hawks 10-2 in the first half and 22-7 overall was having problems of its own.
Until, Peluffo came through minutes into the second half. Taking a pass from Jake Marchesani, the junior All-GSAC forward put the ball by Hawk goalie Bojan Maric for the match’s only score. It was Peluffo’s team-high sixth goal of the year.
Mackey, who wasn’t tested very much, made that lead stand up the rest of the way, making two saves en route to his first career win.
After a pair of wins over the GSAC’s two lowest squads this week, the Mustangs now turn their attention to one of the conference’s and nation’s best, Azusa Pacific. The 12th-ranked Cougars, 4-1 in the GSAC and 11-2 overall, welcome the Mustangs on October 13. The match will kick off at 3:00pm.
