Have you ever wanted the opportunity to minister cross-culturally while you study? You have an opportunity to do this through LABEX (LA Bible Extension). Like IBEX (Israel Bible Extension), where students have the chance to live and study in Israel for a semester, LABEX gives students an opportunity to live and study in a Latino community in downtown Los Angeles for a school year.

LABEX students live in separate units of a large house (The Nehemiah House) blocks away from the First Evangelical Free Church which sponsors the program. The church is looking for students who want to be challenged to grow through compassionate service which compliments their studies. There are financial scholarships and opportunities available.

How much does the internship cost? The price for a semester at LABEX, including tuition, room, and full board (20 meal plan), is the same as that of a full-time on-campus TMC student.

Some of the ministry opportunities at LABEX include:

S.A.Y. Yes! Pico Union Center for Youth Development

S.A.Y. Yes! (Save America's Youth) is an after school mentoring program dedicated to helping at-risk kinds of inner-city LA say "Yes!" to life, character and a future. It is a long-term holistic ministry developing kids spiritually, academically, socially and emotionally. The center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3pm - 6pm.

Mentor Responsibilities - The mentor's main responsibility will be one-on-one and group academic tutoring. The mentor will also be given various program responsibilites in recreation, art, drama, bible teaching, snacks and field trips according to the mentor's desires and skills. The time commitments are as follows:

5 Hours Per Week

          
  • Attend Center one day of the week (Tues, Wed, or Thurs) from 2:30 pm - 6:00pm (3 1/2 hrs)
          
  • Participate in Volunteer Training (2 hrs, once a month)
          
  • Planning and Administration (1 hr)

10 Hours Per Week

          
  • Attend Center two days of the week (Tues, Wed, or Thurs) from 2:30pm - 6:00pm (7 hrs)
          
  • Participate in Volunteer Training (2 hrs, one a month)
          
  • Planning and Administration (1 hr)
          
  • Relational time with kids outside of center (1 hr)
          
  • Tracking with mentorship trainer (1 hr, every 2 weeks)

20 Hours Per Week Staff Member (Paid Position)

          
  • Attend Center all three days (Tues - Thurs) from 2:00 - 6:00 pm (12 hrs)
          
  • Participate in Volunteer Training (3 hrs, once a month)
          
  • Planning and Administration (2 hrs)
          
  • Relational time with kids outside of center (2 hrs)
          
  • Staff meeting (2 hrs, once a month)
          
  • Participate in special field trips (Varies)


Youth Group

Responsibilities:

As a youth intern, you will work under the direction of the youth pastor to eternally impact the lives of urban youth. You will participate in the weekly youth meeting and develop relationships with Junior High and High School students. Your specific responsibilities could include leading a Bible study, leading worship, planning youth meetings, doing drama, or doing video editing. The time commitments are as follows:

4-5 Hours Per Week Internship

          
  • Attend weekly meeting and prep (3 hrs)
          
  • Individual and/or group planning (1-2 hrs)

8-10 Hours Per Week Internship

          
  • Attend weekly meeting and prep (3 hrs)
          
  • Individual and/or group planning (1-2 hrs)
          
  • Lead or assist weekly discipleship group (2 hrs)
          
  • Relational time with youth outside of meetings (2 hrs)
          
  • Phone time or additional planning (1 hr)
          
  • Plus attend special planning and training meetings (2 hrs, once a month)
